Sen. Cruz introduces alternative gun bills

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Monday introduced two gun bills, one of which is co-sponsored by a group of 10 Republicans, many of whom signed a pledge earlier this month to filibuster attempts to pass gun control.

The measures provide an alternative to the gun control bill the Senate will begin debate on this week, which would expand background checks on gun purchases, crack down on gun trafficking and beef up security in schools. GOP senators have vowed to block that bill, claiming it goes too far and infringes on the rights of gun owners.

Cruz introduced a bill to “protect law abiding citizens by preventing criminals from obtaining firearms.” Among the 10 GOP co-sponsors are Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.), Rand Paul (Ky.), and Mike Lee (Utah), all signers of the filibuster pledge. Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) is also a co-sponsor.

Except they need to do away with target rich environments known as “gun free zones.”

You are absolutely right. Their should be no “gun free zones”. You can bet your sweet bippy that criminals will get guns in to cause their desired carnage.

Gotta love Cruz. He’d make a great cabinet member.

It’s my understanding he cannot be POTUS.

        Wiki :
        Early life and education

Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where his parents, Eleanor Darragh and Rafael Cruz, were working in the oil business.

That’s probably true, unfortunately. His mother is an American citizen but his father just became a citizen in 2005. Cruz has lived here since he was 4 years old so he is American schooled. It would be nice to have a solid legal definition of “natural born citizen” though.

Are you kidding me? Trash these gun bills. None of them is worth the paper to write them on.

Our present gun control laws are adequate. What we need are politicians who can grasp the magnitude of gun owership and the abundant evidence that any control needs to be vetted in the criminal element, not the responsible gun-owners

The present gun laws should be examined and thoroughly scrutinized to make sure they do NOT violate the second amendment and if they do they need to be scrapped. I would bet that many of the laws violate the Constitution. Fewer laws are preferable to more laws. How about stricter sentencing for anyone who uses a weapon in the commission of a crime.

Stricter sentencing laws are on the books. In many cases their existence is used as a plea barganing tool to get a guilty plea. The basic sentence is reduced so the “use a gun” enhancement” is negated.

I understand that and it is a HUGE mistake. That is why I am for mandatory sentencing where the judge or the prosecutor does not have an option. For example, in my opinion, crimes against children should have a minimum of 50 years in prison. The murder of a law enforcement officer in the line of duty should be the death penalty etc. IMHO the penalty should be worse than the crime. Until it is not “profitable” to commit the crime, it will NOT stop.

This will be about as effective as that filibuster was.

Like all politicians Cruz is looking to satisfy everyone and in so doing has satisfied none. We have one rule about guns and it is the Second Amendment. Anything else is language to distort the intent and purpose the founders put into the wording of the Second Amendmen. Militia is “the people as a whole” and “the right to keep and bear” holds no exclusions. “Shall not be infringed” means leave us alone. Punish the bad guys but leave us alone. Nothing in the Amendment says anything about deer hunting and no matter how the socialist weasels twist the truth the Amendment is about keeping libery. Shall not be infringed means leave me the f#}k alone.

NO new gun laws! Enforce what is there already. Add severe punishment for the use of guns in the commission of a crime. SEVERE, not a slap on the wrist.

“Do not separate text from historical background. If you do, you will have perverted and subverted the Constitution, which can only end in a distorted, bastardized form of illegitimate government.” James Madison

I would suggest that some elected person in Congress introduce an amendment stating the following:
Constitution and Constitutional Rights Preservation Amendment.
Sec 1. The Constitution of These United States of America and all legislation SHALL be interpreted according to the meaning of the words used in The Constitution or legislation at the time The Constitution or legislation was passed and signed into law.
Sec 2. Any changes in the Constitution or its amendments shall only be done through the formal Constitutional amendment process.

I am a HUGE Cruz supporter, but I am disappointed that he sponsored ANY kind of Gun Control bill. I have not read the bill, but I do not support any attack on the 2nd Amendment. There are many gun restricting laws on the books and have mostly affected, as usual, law abiding citizens rights.

Leave our guns to hell alone .Enforce what laws exist rather than building walls of bueocacies around guns .It’s begining to look like Obamacare to buy a gun .
