Manchin says he’s working with NRA on universal background check bill

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said Thursday that he was working on a bill with Senate colleagues and the National Rifle Association (NRA) that would implement universal background checks, a major component of President Obama’s proposed gun-control reforms.

Manchin, a member of the NRA, had not previously endorsed any specific measures to address gun violence.

“I’m working on a bill right now with other senators — Democrats and Republicans — we’re trying to get it, and looking at a background check that basically says that if you’re going to be a gun owner, you should be able to pass a background check, to be able to get [universal background checks],” Manchin told Metro News radio’s “Talkline,” in an interview reported by The Washington Post.

If this is all they do, it might not be so bad as long as it is reasonable and not extreme. I could pass one but I wonder about good ole Barack Obama. I’ll bet he couldn’t pass one

No, this is the WORST possible outcome because it is universal registration by default. Now they know where every gun is and where to go to get them.
      Hitler did the same thing

Give them an inch and they will take a mile, this is only a first step for them. Remember what happened in Australia, first came a ban on semi autos, then gun registration, then came confiscation. That is their end goal regardless of what they say in public.

If Manchin is telling the truth, this signals that the NRA is again folding on gun owners – just as they did for the 1994 Clinton AWB. And you can bet – this will be stretched to gifts of firearms (want to pass your hunting rifle on to your son or daughter? Then they will have to have a background check done (and you can plan on paying a fee for it). And who keeps this documentation? If I wish to sell one of my firearms to my buddy, would I, under such a law, then have to collect the same info my local gun dealer does? Will I have to buy or print a form 4473, have my buddy fill it out, I call the BATF to get “proceed” – then keep that paperwork so the BATF can come inspect my records at will with no grounds, and without a warrant? Will they then look for every weapon that I have purchased from a firearms dealer – and for each that is no longer in my possession, expect a completed and approved form 4473?

All to exercise a right guaranteed by our Constitution that apparently means nothing.

Away to know who has guns and where to go to take them away, no back ground checks when we won our freedoms with guns. I don’t care if crooks have guns as long as I have one to defeat them or the out of control marxist government.

This is exactly why I refuse to join the NRA. Don’t ever turn your back on them or they will quickly insert the knife and twist.

If the NRA is working with Manchin, it’s to mitigate any damage to legal firearms owners. Maybe you should research the NRA and their work, like the Heller and McDonald decisions.

nra sent me an e-mail that said this rumor is false and said they will never support back ground checks or registration. however, i think the citizens of w va should vote machin out anyway.

Manchin is NOT telling the truth about this. The NRA posted that it is NOT working with Manchin or anyone else to weaken our 2nd. Amendment Rights. The NRA is not and has never “folded” on supporting the legal gun owners of America.

If the NRA even discusses this nonsense they will cease having my membership forever . There are several other firearms protecting our rights possibly much better . GOA , NAGR , 2nd Amendment Foundation , etc:etc: .

The NRA is not in with Manchin. The other organizations are good, but do not have the membership/clout of the NRA.

A stupid idea and anyone who backs it needs to get a brain and stop sitting on the one they call a brain, until you can control evil crooks all you do is control the citizens and that isn’t Constitutional in any way, if the marxist come for your guns you have two choices, make the right one.

Manchin is a democrat, even after everything democrats have done to the people of WVA, they still voted for him. No matter what he says, in he’ll brown nose Obama and screw WVA.

Does any remember the original Red Dawn??? The invaders went to get peoples weapons by such a method that the records had exactly what each person had. The Supreme Court has already determined that such records are unlawful along with each person should be safe within themselves and their homes.

Manchin lies. The NRA is totally against universal background checks which would require checks on your own family members to legally give them a gun .

That’s strange, when will this Government program expand to include a ‘Universal Check’ if I want to loan my truck to my Brother or a baseball bat to my neighbors kid?

This coward Manchin must go. I want to know why gun free zones are not on the table? It seams to me the cowards are attacking gun free zones so remove the gun free zones and problem fixed.

obozo’s 2nd amendment admenments; shall not be infringed; except for universal background checks. shall not be infringed; except for owning scary rifles that look like assault weapons. shall not be infringed; except for the number of bullets allowed. shall not be infringed; except for anything else obozo thinks of.

When Obama opens all his records to the public then and only then I might comply with a universal back ground check, NOT.

IF he speaks about anything that Obama would support then it is WRONG!
