Shotguns: The Best Home Intruder Killing Tool Ever Made

I was serving in the Persian Gulf during the L.A. Riots in the early ‘90s. I called home on a MARS station (Military Auxiliary Radio System) to see if everyone was safe and out of danger. My mother answered the phone and said she could see fires burning from three different directions. From 8,000 miles away, I instructed her to get a pump shotgun from the spare room and made sure she knew how to load it.

She was worried. I assured her the sound of chambering a round was very distinctive, and if she was really worried about shooting someone to touch a round off into the ceiling—no one would likely stick around to see if she got more accurate with the second shot. She assured me if came to that, I would not have to worry about patching a hole in her ceiling. That’s my mom…

I think she grabbed the well-suited Mossberg 500 back then. I am from the school that believes the bigger the bore, the better the boom in a home defense situation. But by no means is that statement meant to discourage someone from using a 20-gauge or a .410. I would prefer something bigger and feel most anyone can handle one, but in the end, a small gun you can wield is better than no gun or the one you are afraid of handling.

When my father was alive and had his business in Houston, he carried a Snake Charmer (.410) to and from work. One of his customers, a HPD Sgt., told him if he ever had to use it to make sure he killed the perp he used it on because they have a nasty habit of coming back if they are just wounded. I’m a bit more trained than my father was and have no plans to wound anyone. If I have a shotgun, I do feel comfortable with it more so than a handgun. Bring it on , liberals!! I wouldn’t hesitate to show you what I mean !! I do prefer #4 buck over the other stuff !!

Not more, just bigger holes # 4 buck was used more in jungle warfare in Vietnam and works great at the range that it would be used in an encounter. A bit more vicious in the hit !!

OK lets make a bet. I’ll aim my 12 gauge at your chest and pull the trigger. last man standing wins! deal-or-no-deal? in seconds you say? how long do you think a load of#2 buckshot takes to travel from muzzle to chest at 10 feet?

Although we have many guns in the house I feel much safer with my loaded five shot 38 stub-nose next to my bed and my husbands 357 magnum in the other night stand. Also have a 12 gauge shotgun but that would be to burdensome to reach in the middle of the night.
What I do is load the first two chambers of my 38 with rat shot (after all I am shooting at a rat am I not?)and the others with slugs. Figure if someone comes near they will feel the sting of pellets, mostly aimed at the groin area, and if that does not stop him then off goes the slugs. Works for me.

I advocate a shotgun to anyone who asks and also in my defense classes, I have Mossberg 500’s in my home and everyone is trained with them !

My house shotgun has TP and I can hit what I shoot. Range of fire inside a house will make a hole smaller than your fist. I’d prefer BG tissue/blood on my walls, vice holes from missed shots.

What does the TP stand for?

I prefer my Pioneer Arms Corp. Greener, in 12 Gauge Double (18 ½ inch Barrel) with my Ruger 357 Vaquero as backup. Also my two NAIDS (Native American Indian dogs) serve as the warning system the biggest is about 145 Lbs (they are Alaskan gray wolves 100%). Although, I also have a pump 12 as well with the same length barrel. My wife likes that one. I was never a fan of a pump.

The “best” gun to have in a home defense scenario is the gun that is the closest. It could be anything from .22 to 12 gauge as long as it’s loaded. I also believe that anyone worth shooting is worth shooting twice (at a minimum).
