Top reasons feds won’t let you buy a gun

Texas continues to lead the nation in the number of requests to buy a gun so far this year, with the number topping 1 million as of the end of August. Not everyone gets the green light after a required background check that uses a data base to verify if a person has a criminal record or other issues that would prevent legal ownership of a gun.

Of more than 174 million requests made nationwide this year, just over 1 million were declined, mostly for criminal convictions, but other categories include people having denounced their U.S. citizenship; being in the country without an immigration permit; and having been dishonorably discharged from the military.

The FBI says these are the top reasons for denials by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System:
