N.J. hands FBI 280K names for database used to bar firearms purchases, report says

About 280,000 people who involuntarily spent time in New Jersey psychiatric facilities over the past 38 years are now part of an FBI database that would prevent them from legally purchasing a gun, according to a report on Philly.com.

The list covers 16 counties — all but Atlantic, Essex, Hudson, Monmouth and Bergen, which will be added by the end of May and increase the number of New Jersey names to about 420,000, the report said.

New Jersey didn’t start forwarding the names in earnest until after the shootings at a Newton, Conn. elementary school left 26 people there dead. Only 17 names had been sent from the Civil Commitment Automated Tracking system at that point, the report said
