The ‘buffalo bill’s’ last stand

Constitutional crisis and bison hunting don’t exactly go together in most people’s minds.

But in Wyoming the two may be paired together for a long time to come because of legislative angst that just happened to find an outlet in a very innocuous bill during the final day of 2013 Wyoming Legislature.

What started out as a bill to allow large caliber guns for bison hunting became a bill that set aside a quarter million dollars to fight off the federal government.

This “bison bill,” House Bill 41, became a channel for lawmakers’ frustration and the only bill in which legislators could make a stand against what many saw as an overreaching federal government.
