N.Y. newspaper’s gun-owner database draws criticism

Thousands of people have taken to their computers and phones in rage after The Journal News posted an online database of local gun-permit holders.

The database, legally obtained from the county clerks’ offices through a Freedom of Information Act request made after the shootings at Sandy Hook (Conn.) Elementary School left 20 children and six staffers dead, has been called irresponsible, dangerous and leaning toward intimidation by online pundits.

Social media played a big part in the exponential spread of the story, whose map has been recommended more than 20,000 times.

Is it now maybe time to reconsider the Ist Ammendment?
    Consider the PRESS.

When the Constitution was first created and well into the first half of the 20th Century, the News Business, primarily newspapers, functioned as Guadians of the Public Trust. Keeping watch on those in positions of power and or authority. They have since gone from reporting the NEWS, to determining just what IS News, and molding public opinion. Generaly in support of a political agenda. When not ADVOCATING, they are working as reputation asassins for fun and profit or simpley in the effort to further their own careers. Or as commercial Flaks for industry. Being the Self Appointed, Self ANNOINTED, guardians is just not good enough in this modern era. We perhaps need a training and Licensing program much like the Medical or Legal fields. With strict codes of ethics. Both Proffesional and PERSONAL. After all times have changed. And the Constitution, as we all know, a ‘LIVING’ Document, must needs change with them.

This dumb ads news paper just told every crook in town that would be many where to look for a new firearm Bravo If they had two brains one would be out looking for the other one.

Also told them where all the ‘Easy Pickin’s’ are.
Homes they can hit with no fear of getting shot.

      • Docs357

Amen that’s should be a lawsuit right there

A freely accessible database of gun owners is ALSO a database of defenseless, targetable homes, by virtue of their NOT being on “the list.” This is precisely why I registered to carry, even though there isn’t a firearm in the home…. at this moment…. or is there?

The newsaper had NO right to show where these people live. What are they doing? Showing angry libs where to go to protest after the school shooting? Telling robbers where to gun free guns or all the above. That is invasion of privacy and rights. I get so sick and tired of liberal media.

Lets post the name(s) of the responsible for posting all the names of NY gun owners to each and every one of those owners. Then lets see how long it takes before an angry owner goes after the responsible. We should plaster the responsible’s name, address, and photo, and see who takes him out faster!

  • James Fontana

The news[a[er should be fined heavily for invasion of privacy and such record should not be available under any circumstance

We don’t have a free press anymore anyway, Obama and his administration own it, they have for the past 4 years. When you can have a TV Anchor sit there and tell the whole world about the “tingle going up his leg” when Obama won, and during the campaign they gave him more coverage than his opponent, way more then you don’t have a free press anymore and you don’t have “Journalist” anymore either. True Journalism has been long gone in America. Mary711
