Wyoming lawmakers consider silencers on hunting guns

Wyoming lawmakers will decide in coming months whether to follow a growing national trend and allow the use of silencers on hunting guns.

Proponents say there’s no reason to ban the devices that screw onto the muzzle of a firearm to catch the blast and muffle the sound of a shot. Not only do they prevent hearing damage, supporters say, they also reduce noise pollution.

Some opponents, though, say they believe allowing silencers for hunting would be unsporting and unnecessary. They say hunters increasingly laden with high-tech gadgets don’t need yet another advantage when they go up against game species whose defenses always have been only their alertness and ability to run away.

Sounds like a plan to me. People who are against suppressors usually have never heard one in real life and think that they sound like something from a James Bond movie.

      psst…..

How did they make the sound of the slide and extractor go away?

Couldn’t tell you. I don’t do Hollywood special effects.

I have seen, in my childhood, a 1920’s .22 with a factory made suppressor attached at the factory. As I remember. the sound was substantially reduced, but I could hear the bolt every time, loud and clear.

I’ve heard a WW2 DeLisle silenced carbine. It’s extremely quiet because it’s a bolt action. You don’t hear any real noise until you cycle the bolt.

Agree, a real “silencer’ is not the tiny screw on seen in movies…….

I wish they’d allow them on the range. Shooting next to a high-powered rifle can be quite painful. Huh? Sorry, you say something?

What morons. Silencers are hardly high tech. The noise from a weapon does not provide any kind of advantage to the animal. The bullet gets there long before the noise. A silencer does NOT impair their “alertness or ability to run away”. It does however provide hearing protection for the shooter. That’s enough reason to use one.

It will put a burden on the game wardens and the states will lose revenue…….
