GOP blocks bill to give hunters more land access

A wide-ranging bill to give hunters and fishermen more access to public lands stalled in the Senate Monday after Republicans said it spends too much money.

Republicans supported opening lands for outdoorsmen and many other provisions in the bill sponsored by Democratic Sen. Jon Tester, but GOP senators blocked the legislation on principle Monday evening in a mostly party-line procedural vote after Senate Budget Committee’s top Republican, Jeff Sessions of Alabama, objected to spending on conservation programs included in the bill.

The sportsmen’s bill would increase land access and allow hunters to bring home as trophies 41 polar bears killed in Canada before the government started protecting polar bears as a threatened species. The legislation would also exclude ammunition and tackle from federal environmental laws that regulate lead, allow bow hunters to cross federal land where hunting isn’t allowed, encourage federal land agencies to help states maintain shooting ranges, boost fish populations and protect animal habitat.

Allowing land access is free. Furthermore, all the ‘federally owned’ land should be sold to pay the massive debt these fools have racked up. This land belongs to the people, not government bureaucrats and left-wing enviro whackos.

Came here to post the same thing. Agreed.

How about we take away some ‘phone privileges’ of welfare queens and stop replacing “Stolen Food Stamps” without question? Then maybe we could afford this initiative.

Face it, if you have a drop of blood in you that says you should earn a living and spend time out doors – – – to the remainder of America we are Dinosaurs!

The land access is free. What the hunters and fishermen wanted was free. What the democrats wanted was not free. I’d rather have it voted down then spend more money we don’t have.

  • Ihatelibs

Guess we have to hunt in DC

    • RightStuff44

Wow, what fun!!! So many libs, so little time.

I was a Republican. After the happenings in Congress the last few days I’m not sure I have a party any more.

I am a republican , but this is just another example of how stupid the republication leadership is , there are thousands of places they they can cut but they have no guts and will let the demonrats use this against them . Just as a side note , anything we can do to decrease government in our lives is just as important as the economy because the trouble with the economy IS the size of the government .

Read the actual text of the bill – you might rethink your position. I’m from Montana and this article is way too short to cover the actual contents of a bill that sounds good but contains several poison pills Conservatives SHOULD be up in arms about. Tester and Baucus are both big-time Liberals and this bill is a LOT more than this puny article.

  • Zundfolge

The bill ALSO made it easier for the Federal Government to seize private property under the guise of protecting the environment.

As much as I’d like more land open to hunting, I’m not willing to sacrifice what little property rights we have left to do it.

Why do the feds need to own 40% of the land anyway.

  • ride2live

Gun Owners of America is calling it a “land seizure act”. I wonder why Sessions doesn’t mention that prt, only the spending? http://www.capwiz.com/gunowners/issues/alert/?alertid=62148536

  • RightStuff44

The feds should monetize the land it owns, and maybe we could pay off some of our national debt. All they need to do is to put the land up for sale, and bingo, people would buy it.

  • reggiec

Contact your Senator and urge passage of this bill. It also forces BLM and the Forest Service to facilitate the trade or purchase of land that early settlers homesteaded and now the feds claim have boundary disputes. It is not just about hunting. It is about federal land grabs to exert their idea they are in control of us all.

There are some parts of the bill which are laudable, but read the whole thing: this is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

NO, NO, NO!!!! This is a perfect example of pass the bill then read it; remember Obuthead’s healthcare bill? This bill has a few enticements to sucker conservatives to accept it, but overall it is a very bad idea. READ THE BILL before you make a comment.

Since when do politicians worry about spending too much money…

  • santiago

I lived in Colorado for 28 years. Each year I hunted and fished and camped and cut firewood on “federally owned land”. Our national and state owned parks are there for the benefit of all and while fees are collected through a variety of means they are by no means burdensome. To suggest we sell our heritage is to deny future generations the enjoyment we have had.
