In Virginia, more guns, less crime

As gun ownership has increased dramatically, gun-related violent crimes have gradually decreased over the past six years in the state of Virginia, according to a new analysis.

From 2006 to 2011, the total number of guns purchased in Virginia increased 73 percent, while the total number of gun-related violent crimes decreased 24 percent over that period. And when adjusted for population growth, the number of crimes further decreases to more than 27 percent, with 79 gun-related offenses per 100,000 in 2006 dropping to 57 by 2011.

Virginia Commonwealth University professor Thomas R. Baker conducted the analysis at the request of the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Baker told the paper that the findings appear to contradict the popular premise that more guns cause more violent crime.

People need to bear the responsibility of self protection first, call for help second. Police carry weapons for their safety, not necessarily yours. All able bodies people should buy, carry and learn to use a gun. If you dont feel comfortable with one then don’t. Even Jesus told us in Luke 22:36 to carry a swoard and if you dont have one, sell your cloak and buy one. Self preservation is your responsibilty first.

You are correct cwins2005, all able bodied people should be able to bare the responsibility of self protection first and foremost, problem is that in Illinois we happen to have Leftist Progressive Democrat as a Mayor in Chicago our largest City in Illinois which literally controls the entire political State with their Anti-Gun, Anti-Self Defense for citizen policies as well as a Governor named Quinn also a Democrat with the very same Leftist Progressive Anti-Gun , Anti-Self Defense policies which are in constant violation of the 2nd amendment every day they allow their policies to stand.

Problem is we should not even allow politicians at all to dictate or control how people can protect themselves, or what they can carry with them to defend themselves with or to feel safer and more secure.

Mike, from here on it’s Hellinois. This is embarassing, but I live here too.

Isn’t it possible there is a correlation between Virginia having a high percentage of it’s state citizens receiving a college education and causing lowered rates of crime….hmm. Nope, it could only be from guns.

    • greyghost69

Nice try, but the story says that gun purchases went up 73% and crime went down. So it was the guns after all. I smell a troll!

There are numerous changes a state goes through which could cause a decrease in crime, besides an increase in gun sales. Also, most of the increases I would venture were from the northern, less populated areas of Virginia. The areas where crime is already low. There was a study done in NY NY regarding the decrease of crime during the 90’s. They found it was a culmination of a variety of reasons, all of which resulting in a massive drop in crime. Some of the reasons being an increase in police, better education, and improved economic growth. There was also findings showing the citizens had simply formulated a belief the city was getting better. Essentially, NY developed a positive, self fulfilling prophecy. Gun sales were not found to have made a difference one way or another.

DO YOU HEAR THAT CHICAGO, ROHM EMANUAL AND ILLINOIS LEGISLATURES AS WELL AS GOVERNOR QUINN OF THE GREAT STATE OF INSANITY CALLED ILLINOIS, MORE GUNS EQUALS LESS CRIME, unless of course you like the idea of more helpless victims called unarmed citizens being in Illinois with no guns to defend themselves from the criminals in Illinois. Another possibility is of course that you Rohm Emanual of Chicago, the State legislatures, and Governor Quinn, you yourselves are the criminal enterprise in Illinois.

Illinois is the last holdout State not to allow their citizens to either Openly Carry their guns with them at all times or Conceal Carry their guns with them at all times for Safety and Security at all times wherever they go, and the Legislatures, Mayors, and Governor of the great State of Insanity called Illinois should be totally ashamed of themselves. After all, they all have Armed Security Services with them on a around the clock basis, but of course the citizens of Illinois aren’t as important as our great Elected Officials and do not need to feel Secure or Protected.

As in EVERY case the LIES spread by the tinhorn city people. Gun ownership literally means a SAFER
society, but just keep ignoring the FACTS and keep LYING to everyone to keep YOUR delusion alive.

  • MontieR

You mean the popular LIE that is more guns more crime.

    • mugato

      You mean truth?
