Speaker’s goal: Get more women hunting

Terri Lee Pocernick grew up in Hayward and started accompanying her dad on hunting expeditions at age 10. She quickly learned to be comfortable in the woods.

Pocernick will attempt to convey that comfort when she speaks at 2:45 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Wisconsin Sport Show, an event sponsored by the Eau Claire Press Co. March 17-18. Her speeches are intended for women, although men are welcome to listen.

Comfort outdoors extends beyond wearing appropriate clothing, Pocernick said, to feeling comfortable psychologically in the woods.

“We’re hoping (women) will take a step out there to try something a little bit different, a little bit new,” she said.

For the past four years, Pocernick has maintained a website, campwildgirls.com, designed to cater to women who hunt.

“We’re trying to pull our community of women together,” she said. “Almost every woman hunter until recently — until Facebook — we were all kind of separate in different areas. It wasn’t until recently that we realized there’s actually a lot of us out there.”
