Four Guns for the Twenty First Century Patriot

When we think of patriotism and firearms, many might conjure up images of lines of Continental soldiers going muzzle to muzzle with British Redcoats or militiamen picking off His Majesty’s officers with their Kentucky Rifles at distance, or maybe Union soldiers repelling Pickett’s Charge with Springfield muskets with fixed bayonets gleaming in the hot July sun. But what of the modern patriot? What firearms does he or she have to look to for guidance in these trying times? With all the foreign firearms like Glock having made such serious inroads into our culture, are there any American guns left to look up to today? There are and they may surprise you.

1. Colt 1911 Government Model
Few guns have had such an impact on our psyche and the firearms industry all the while protecting American forces like the Colt 1911 Government Model.

It took years for me to look at the m-16 in a positive way since I had seen the bad side of them back in the late 1967s. I can remember them jamming on a regular basis while fam firing at high sea. I aslo can remember hauling a plane load of them back to the ship —–and the bodies of the dead Marines that they had failed on. I carried an M-14 when flying just to have a reliable firearm in case we were shot down. I would have humped 12 mags and 6 bandoleers if that had happened but gladly! As it turned out, the major problem was the powder used in the ammo was the major problem .I finally ceded that it must be a fairly good firearm since it has served for so long now.

I purchased a 1911 to take to RVN in 1965, even though I was issued an M16. I carried one again in the Gulf rather than that 9mm POS. I cut my teeth on the M1, and love it to this day. I was never excited by the Winchester 1873, but adore the 1897 trench gun.
