Carolinas fishing forecast: Mackerel make appearance just in time

As if on cue, big king mackerel arrived in waters off the Southeastern N.C. coast last weekend just in time for a major fishing tournament.

It took a king weighing 41.6 pounds to win the annual Jolly Mon King Mackerel tourney, based at Ocean Isle Fishing Center. Dave Canady of Southport pulled the winner aboard the boat Snap One.

Finishing second was Matt Gay of Walstonburg with a king of 37.5 pounds that he caught while trolling from the Southern Bale. The top 10 finishers in the event that attracted anglers aboard 176 boats weighed in kings exceeding 30 pounds.
