Marathon Runner Attacked By Black Bear

black bearALBUQUERQUE, NM(KRQE)– Game and Fish officials are searching for a bear that attacked a woman Saturday.

Officials say the attack happened in the Valles Caldera National Preserve near Los Alamos. The woman was participating in a marathon event when she came across a mother bear whose cub ran up a tree, officials say.

The woman was airlifted to an Albuquerque hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Officials say, initial reports of her injuries indicate that she was bit and scratched – receiving injuries to her head, neck and upper body.

Officials say they are working the National Park Service to deter people from entering the area. Once the bear is found it will be euthanized and tested for rabies.

Prepare for people to start FREAKING OUT.

Is it a bad idea to host a marathon in a wildlife preserve? Yes.

Is it sad the mamma bear has to die? Yes.

Is it necessary for the National Park Service to find the bear and kill it? Yes.

2016 shall forever be known as The Year of the Martyred Animals. From the gorilla, to the lions in Peru, to the gators at Disney, to now this black bear. It’s unfortunate that these animals continue to die due to human stupidity, but the public outrage is getting out of hand. Human life will always trump animal life. That’s a fact that will (hopefully) never change. It’s ignorant to think that a human should lose their life in order to preserve the life of an animal. The comments ranging from, “they should euthanize the runner/park rangers/marathon coordinators” need to stop.

Something tells me you wouldn’t feel the same if something like this happened to your family member.

(SIDE NOTE: I’m surprised people didn’t protest The Revenant for Leo killing the grizzly.)
