A study commissioned by the Western Governors’ Association and outdoor groups found that outdoor recreation accounts for more economic activity annually than the pharmaceutical and automobile industries.

The study, released Sunday during the Western Governors’ Association’s annual meeting at Suncadia, reports that Americans spent more than $646 billion on outdoor recreation in 2011. In comparison, the pharmaceutical industry accounted for $331 billion of economic activity in the U.S. during 2010, and the motor vehicles and parts industry accounted for $340 billion. The financial services and insurance industry accounted for $780 billion, and the outpatient health care industry accounted for $767 billion.
