It seems that one of the quickest ways to become a social media pariah these days is to post a hunting photo.
Even before the infamous shooting of Cecil the Lion — where much of the outrage arose from the belief that the iconic animal was lured from a protected area — people were being ridiculed on social media for posting big game hunting photos.
Now, a 10-year-old Texas girl is getting media attention for her record-setting alligator kill, as Fox News reports, and some social media users want to make her “famous” in the same manner as Cecil the Lion’s killer.
Ella Hawk was out hunting with her parents, Tony and Cindy, and a guide in late September when they came across a large gator in the waters of the Guadalupe River.
Ella, who was last year’s Trophy Game Records (TGR) Youth Huntress of the Year, reportedly delivered a perfect, single shot with her crossbow from 15 yards away, instantly paralyzing and killing the reptile.
When they pulled the creature out of the water, however, they realized just how massive it was. Measuring in at a length of 13 feet and weighing 800 pounds, Ella’s gator was enough to land her the top spot in the world TGR’s database, which has been keeping records for about 30 years.
When news of Ella’s record quickly spread, some on social media were quick to condemn:
What a prick, already !!!! Please help her become "famous" ELLA HAWK from Texas…. A 10-year-old Texas girl… http://t.co/wYdnsAMKCl
