Niles man breaks state record with 50-pound catfish

A nearly 50-pound catfish caught by a southwest Michigan man in the St. Joseph River on May 22 has been certified as a state record, the Department of Natural Resources announced this morning.

The 49.8-pound flathead catfish caught by Rodney Akey of Niles bested the previous record of 47.5 pounds, recorded 69 years ago on the Maple River in Ionia County, DNR officials said.
