COYOTE-HUNTING HOUNDS

Levi Johnson’s dogs like to play a game with coyotes.

The sport can be deadly or embarrassing.

Johnson’s two mountain curs — 5-year-old Dezi and Copper, 4 — have been trained to locate coyotes, chase them and then retreat to bring the wild dogs within rifle range of Johnson and his camouflaged friends – typically less than 100 yards, and sometimes as close as 3 feet.

“Everyone who sees it is in awe,” said Ryan Lawson, one of Johnson’s friends.
