500 show for Sun River opening, shed hunting

When it hit high noon Tuesday, almost 500 people charged forward onto the fields below the Rocky Mountains northwest of here as if they were making a battlefield charge.

They were fighting for antlers shed by elk in March.

The quirky spring ritual, which pits foot soldiers against people riding horses and driving vehicles in a race to the horns, marks the opening of popular state wildlife management areas — and the end of another long Montana winter.
