Alabama alligator hunting season set for August, registration begins in June

It’s seven seasons in and folks are still interested in alligator hunting. No, not the History Channel’s hit show “Swamp People,” but the annual Alabama alligator hunting season, registration for which opens June 5.

The television show, featuring father-son duo Troy and Jacob Landry and other hunters, may have led to the popularity of the sport in its three seasons, but Alabamians have been taking part in controlled hunts here for six years.

Keith Gauldin, alligator hunt coordinator for the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, said the hunts have been successful, but Alabama gators won’t be going back on the endangered species list anytime soon.
