Some years ago I was invited to debate on live radio a representative from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Formerly Handgun Control, Inc., this organization is devoted to the disarmament of American citizens. As an advocate of the Second Amendment, I took the key position that our framers meant to protect an individual right to bear arms, and, having just come off a hard-fought war against a tyrannical government, intended that armament of the populace would act as a deterrent against future government tyranny. This, charged my opponent, was the same mind-set held by people such as Timothy McVeigh, the convicted and executed terrorist behind the Murrah Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City.
It took every ounce of my willpower to keep from cramming a microphone down the Brady guy’s throat.
