Background checks for firearms on the rise

Federal background checks on people aiming to buy guns continue to rise, both statewide and nationwide.

A sampling of police agencies, gun safety instructors, and shooting range officials speculate that concern over crime is the reason.

One shooting range official said fear of President Obama tightening gun laws is another reason.

The FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System reports the agency initiated 18,697 firearms background checks in Massachusetts during March, the most of any month in the state since the program was implemented on Nov. 30, 1998.
